 11/2/2009 2:08:27 PM  |  Larry States, AkronNewsNow.com

Election day means no school for Akron public schools students.

As voters go the polls in the city of Akron Tuesday, Akron Public Schools students will stay home. Students will have the day off since several Akron Schools are designated voting sites.

School officials say having students in class at these polling locations on election day can impede the voting process.

Only teachers and office personell will be on the job in Akron city schools on election day.

how about they move polling places out of the schools? how about akron consolidate some of the poling places?? i have to vote at patterson park, but there's a polling place at jennings (about 50 yards from my house), there's one at forrest hill, there's one at the church on york (i think st. anthony's?)....there's like 4 that i know of in a 1 mile radius of each other....can't they be consolidated somewhat?? maybe that would lower election costs too for the county/city....

I do not ever recall students impeding the voting process. I would like someone to explain how that would even occur. A real concern is that with all sorts of people entering the school, some may be mischief makers.

I think it is ridiculous that the students have election day off..and that having the students in school "impedes the election process"...HOW???? The whole time I was in school voting was held at the schools I attended with no problems whatsoever...and so it was with my son. How can having students in the building impede the voting process? Get real!! If it is a problem...then move the voting places to other locations.

I work in another local school district. It is not about the kids impeding anything, it is about the safety of the children. Think about it, all year long we keep the doors locked, and you have to be buzzed in after someone has seen you on a camera and usually has obtained your reason for entering the building.

On election day, the elections board expects us to prop the doors open and let anyone and everyone just walk in. This is a danger to the kids, it would only take one person to slip out of the voting area and into the rest of the school where they could cause real problems.

You are right, they need to move the polling places out of the schools. Our superintendent wrote letters to the BOE and tried, all they did was whine and say they could not find any other suitable locations, and that they law allows them to take over your schools for voting anyway.

The other problem is, at least for us, that the gym also doubles as the cafeteria, so the kids have to eat in the rooms which is a nightmare.

It is more about the safety of the children. I have seen people wandering all over the building before and after they vote. We already have situations where non-custodial parents come into the building and try to take their child. Think what could happen with all these "strangers" just wandering the halls. These buildings were not set up to control people AFTER they enter the building. And although some of them can get on your nerves, all children are precious and deserve to be protected as do the staff in the building.

another sign of the fall of Akron public schools system. too many schools too many whiners about safety of kids simple solution to wandering baffons have a police in sight of the polling booths to make sure that there is no wrong doers....Akron schools are failing both in Ohio standards, but in USA standards...

i don't blame the schools for this....it's the BOE that insists on using schools...there are WAY too many polling places in akron and they could be consolidated in places other than schools! they could consolidate the one from jennings over to patterson park, as patterson park has a gym there....it seems that the summit BOE doesn't want to do anything that would cost effective....
